Fitness Activities for the Winter Months

Bears may hibernate in the winter but you most definitely do not have to. Just because you are stuck in a cosy chalet somewhere in the Alps, it does not mean you should stay between the sheets all day to keep yourself warm. Get moving and prevent the much dreaded winter weight gain. Put on your snow shoes and take a walk outside. Ask family members or friends to come along and spend the morning looking for animal tracks. Walking in the snow may look easy, but a half hour of doing it is enough to provide a decent workout for your legs, buttocks, and thighs. If walking bores you then perhaps you can revisit your childhood memories and build your own gigantic snowman. Rolling balls of snow may not seem like much of an exercise, but it will definitely burn more calories than eating a bowl of pasta by the fireplace.

If you like to feel the wind blowing in your hair and you prefer exercises that have more grace, then look for the closest ice-skating rink and skate the afternoon away. This would be the perfect time to show off your figure skating jumps and spirals. But if you are far from being the next Michelle Kwan, stick to basic skating moves for your own safety.

If you really cannot stand the thought of going outside in the chilly weather, you can still keep yourself fit while staying indoors. Turn up the volume on your stereo speakers and dance to your favourite upbeat tracks. Dance and jump around until you feel yourself working up a sweat and your heart rate is raised to a nice, healthy level. With a little creativity and determination, you will never run out of ways to keep yourself fit, even in the winter.
